I visited a factory up the road the other day and the MD was showing me this wonderful switchboard. He said he could hit any of those switches and his company would instantly transform what colour his frontage was, what colour the bricks were, it changed the style of the roof and added some shadows to the left with this switch and a moonlit kind of overcast shadow with this switch – but – he hastened to add – it doesn’t change a darn thing about whats inside…

He was joking around of course about how easy so many people think they can transform their business with a lick of paint or a new ‘theme’… It’s what’s inside that counts. What the company produces, how well it produces there widgets and how well it adds value at every stage for each and every customer.

It’s all about the content and creating value.

Just being bright and shiny and showing off the latest and greatest ‘whatever is hot right now‘ doesn’t guarantee great content and great value.

Just Another Pointless Blog

So many platforms. So many plugins, themes and styles. Where the heck to start, where to turn next. Oh my gowshhh!

Stop! It’s just another pointless blog. Or, is it?

They can show you all these awesome designs and all the wonderful colour schemes, themes, layouts, skins, styles, whatever they want to call them – but until you add your own 2-pence worth, until you add your own branding and, most importantly, until you add your own content, it’s just another blog and many are all pretty much the same – rather plain, dull and uninspiring – until you bring it to life with a sprinkling of you, a slice or two of your personality…

Until such time – if you’re getting excited about the layouts and colours of the next awesome $49 Wordpress theme – you give it a life. Start writing some content. Put your own mark on it – until then… pink, blue, black, yellow, shadows, rounded edges, single or multiple side-bars, menu on the left, menu on the right, ads or no ads, wide header, shallow header, logo left, logo right, serif or sans-serif, thesis, frugal or studio press…

Void of your own personality, void of your own ’style’ and void of your own unique valuable content – it’s just another pointless blog.

Couldn't agree more. It reminds me of when desktop publishing programmes became popular in the work place in the late eighties. Hey presto everyone was a designer! Just because it is so easy to publish a blog with the genius that is WordPress and others, doesn't mean you can magically become a blogger. Content is the point surely? The rest is marketing. Vx
  • Excellent comparison Vicki, and you are so right. It became 'easy' to buy the tools to create wonderful leaflets and business cards etc., It all looked so amazing with all the demos of wonderful templates and vibrant colours etc., but those templates suddenly seem very bland when viewed in the DTP app without any content.

How many people bought the most amazing DTP app and realised it wasn't about the "tools" at all? If you don't know what to say, no DTP app would make the task any easier, and that applies to all the wonderful blogging platforms and tools we have at our disposal today.

The tool box may be full of all the latest and greatest apps, plugins and 'skins' but if the "ideas" box is empty - no amount of spending on everything bright and shiny will help.

Oh crap - you mean my leaflet won't look that good unless I actually "think" about what to put on it?
  • Martin...have you spying on me again? watching me pace my studio, muttering about fonts and headers? throwing darts at a board covered in tiny scraps of paper with the names of the latest/greatest widgets on them? discussing the advantages of certain apps with my dog?

    Stop that. Stop that now.

I'm trying to work here...no more prying. Now...what were you talking about?

    Oh, right. Content.

Damn. Are you sure I can't just put on a new lipstick...and be the most popular girl in the room? Please.

    and thank you....*wink~!
  • You carry on pacing, muttering and throwing darts at your post-it notes Janet. At the end of it all you come up with interesting and funny things to - which is the outcome many should try now and then instead of regurgitating the same old same old thoughtless, valueless crap that clutters our bandwidth.

Pass the lipstick - maybe I can tart things up around here with a slight hint of warm pinky gloss.
