Each to their own opinion, Sam. I respect opinions but, I think the ‘Steve Jobs Changed The World’ banner wavers need to look at the state of the world. A billion people on our planet survive (just about) on a dollar or two a day. Did that change because of the iPod?

Without doubt, Ruth. “Weird and Unhealthy” is certainly something I agree with. We are human, after all. Humans have abilities that we are simply neglecting. If a family of chimpanzees stopped socially interacting in a zoo type environment, the keepers would start to analyse them and wonder what was wrong with them. But aren’t we doing that very same thing? Aren’t we failing (and more and more losing the ability) to really engage socially?

Something is wrong!

Even when it comes to “people who you actually know” I still prefer to actually speak to those people in person, by phone, rather than rely on short messages that may or may not be read and/or replied to; may not be read in the correct context, may not be as private as we want it to be…

Man has done destroying most of the planet. Phase 2: Destroy human social abilities and communication skills.

I agree – Facebook, Twitter etc. – we end up living in a virtual world. Its great for keeping in touch with contacts far away WHO YOU ACTUALLY KNOW – but for the rest I find it wierd and unhealthy.

Great post, Martin!

Facebook is really picky on their rules and regulations. Even to the point of being a bit paranoid, especially when it comes to protecting their own intellectual property.

They can’t shut the entire market down. However, if they tried, they could remove the application or at least restrict it from America. Just a matter of time and when they decide to do something.

Hi Sam. There are many opinions about Steve Jobs and I appreciate each and every one of them. My feeling on the whole “changed the world’ concept is that it got a bit out of hand and people who did, in fact, change the world, didn’t do it via a multi-billion dollar organisation who had one sole purpose: Profit.

I really appreciate it. I am from India and I can’t even think about buying an Apple product. It’s all priced so high here and I really didn’t understand when people started saying Steve Jobs changed the world. Actually, Bill gates has done a lot for India, I would say. Without him I wouldn’t have known anything about computers and there are millions of Software Engineers who go to work because of him (including me).

Hi “Speedriff” – thanks for your comments. Although I got Notes and iCal working, it took a few attempts and I’d no doubt struggle if I had to start again. Like you have found, I find Apple support absolutely useless. You would think the money we spend on all these (over priced) Chinese manufactured products would buy us some decent support but I am still waiting since July for 3 or 4 call backs about issues with Lion! There website is just as helpful and when I search for Apple related tech answers I avoid the links to Apple forums because they invariably are totally unhelpful. You never know, one day Apple might actually get all their products working together – but I ain’t holding my breath!

You got Notes and iCal to sync across all devices? Consider yourself lucky. What a joke the iCloud is. I have lost important data in iCal just trying to sync between devices, all to no avail. Notes? Forget it. I consider myself to be pretty computer literate so I have to figure if I’m having these problems, so are most. I guess the wait time at 1-800-My-Apple says it all. Oh, and for the record, don’t waste your time there as they haven’t a clue either. The guy I talked to emailed me a link to their support site, which, is useless as well. If it all worked like it should, maybe the support site would be worthwhile. As of now it is useless and so is Apple tech support. It would seem they are lost in the cloud. EPIC FAIL.

Really do like this post. Regurgitation! What a fantastic word – and so apt for what is inherently another SMM book about the same old thing that we have been reading about for who knows how long now. I agree there have not been many “golden nuggetts” of ingenuity in this arena for a long time now, simply “back-scratching” from one high level “guru” or another (although I do note folks are now called gurus and not “ex-spurts”!).

I think the pizza would have been more value – but then I can be cynical ;D

Martin, I am the developer for ContestBurner and I assure you the application does not violate any of the Facebook guidelines. The items you highlight, liking a page, tagging in a photo, tagging in a video, post on your wall, etc. are all allowed in promotions and do not in any way violate the Facebook Guidelines. The guidelines state “You must not use Facebook features or functionality as a promotion’s registration or entry mechanism. For example, the act of liking a Page or checking in to a Place cannot automatically register or enter a promotion participant.” ContestBurner does not do this, we do not use any Facebook feature as the registration or entry mechanism, you enter the contest by clicking on a “Enter Contest” button. ContestBurner awards point to you for the Facebook activities, but does not use them to enter you in the contest. Awarding users for their actions on Facebook is allowed and encouraged by Facebook, they want users to interact. The only other item I see in the guidelines that you may think there is an issue with is :”You must not condition registration or entry upon the user taking any action using any Facebook features or functionality other than liking a Page, checking in to a Place, or connecting to your app. For example, you must not condition registration or entry upon the user liking a Wall post, or commenting or uploading a photo on a Wall.” and again, we do not violate this policy either. Entry into the contest is not conditional on any activity other than connecting to our Facebook App. The Page admin may choose to condition entry on Liking the page, if they choose to, but ContestBurner does not require it. Both of these conditions of entry, adding the app and liking, are specifically listed in the guidelines as allowed “…other than liking a Page, checking in to a Place, or connecting to your app.”
