Change is good! Do we all agree? I hope so ‘cos that’s all I’m going to talk about here – changes! Facebook, by implementing the “universal ‘LIKE’ button” have, in many ways, done something cool. How often have you stared at a “please complete your personal profile” form and thought ‘oh gosh, what shall I add in here’…

Lynn Harrisberger Marketing on Facebook

Well, FB, via the universal ‘Like’ button, have opened up possibilities for other platforms to automatically pull in your interests, your favourite movies, your favourite sports and music, etc., by collating the info you/I share every time we click the ‘Like’ button.

I know that many people don’t like (there I said ‘like’) so much of their personal information and preferences being visible to the public and that’s a choice they have to make. If you want to be completely private and hide away in the lost foothills of some mystery island in the far reaches of nowhere – don’t have a FB account. If you want to be open, transparent, accessible and REAL – have a FB account and share your likes and (possibly in the future) your dislikes with the world.

Let’s just remember that all the social platforms you use; everywhere you have a ‘public’ profile; you are sharing personal information – so what difference if Facebook is now enabling all your likes and dislikes to be pulled together? It saves your friends visiting all corners of the web to find out what you favourite flavour of Ben & Jerrys is…

Yes it will all be used for marketing and yes we are all part of the mass of data being used to determine perfect targeting of adverts – but hey – if advertising keeps us all connected by keeping platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube (etc.,) free – then I certainly have no problem with it.

There’s always a (relatively small) cluster of people who threaten to jump ship whenever major changes are rolled out (yes, I’m sure there’s a dozen or more new groups started already begging Facebook to back peddle)  and I’ve already seen many having a whinge about these latest ‘improvements’ but – will they jump ship or are they, like millions of us, so addicted to our beloved Facebook that we’ll (eventually) accept the changes and carry on as we were…?

I know there are several changes being rolled out, but, there’s my tupence with on the Universal like” button… What’s yours? The changes may not be your cuppa and I invite all comments below, or even on Lynn’s wall – or mine – wherever. The point being that if you have an opinion, please share it.

It's unlikely I'll start sending you Christmas cards, birthday cards and gifts but, if you like any of my random blog droppings, I would sincerely appreciate your support. All you need to do is share it on your favourite platform. It's actually relatively easy. Here are the most popular 'social/sharing' links:
