Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google are most likely the first few websites you think of when you think about Internet Marketing, social branding etc., but have you explored Flickr yet?
Would you be shocked if I tell you that Flickr is one of the top 10 most visited websites on the ‘net? Well, be shocked because it is.
In 2006 / 2007 it was 6th or 7th most used website for photo and video sharing and for building groups. Since then there has been so many new websites launched that challenge Flickr’s domination but it is still said to be the most popular Photo Sharing platform.
Flickr is not just a Photo sharing platform!
No, no, no… Flickr is a fully fledged Social Networking and Media Sharing Platform (as is the new trend for social networking sites like Facebook to incorporate media sharing and for media sharing sites like YouTube to incorporate community building)…
Flickr is a brilliant platform for sharing photos and videos abut it is also a great place to meet like minded people in groups, make new friends and – of course – find some pretty decent pictures. Just the other day I came across a group based on my local area and found some amazing photos. You just never know what you’ll find until you look.
Internet Marketing on Flickr
Firstly: Please read this bit twice; Please don’t abuse it. There are opportunities for ‘promotion’ on Flickr but do not abuse that opportunity else you will (I hope) get your account shut down.
Marketing is something Flickr frowns upon – big style. But you can get away will ’subtle’ marketing, and here’s a quick run down of what can be done without going over the top:
- Use your website address (domain) as your ’screen name’ and add your real name.
- Use your profile to mention your website and company (but don’t use any sales chatter).
- Upload quality photos consistently – not just one photo and leave it to collect dust.
- Make sure the photos you upload are relevant to your business but throw a personal twist in there too from time to time (keep it real).
- Write appropriate and relevant descriptions for each photo.
- Find groups that you are interested in and participate in the communities. Your screen name will be your ‘branding’ and anyone interested in you will see you link in your profile.
- Add your domain as a tag on all your images.
There you go. A few tips about using Flickr for branding. I could go into a lot more detail but I don’t advocate abusing all the social media sharing platforms for Internet Marketing purposes. If you’d like to know a bit more – the answers are out there in Googleland or give me a shout and I’ll help you.
Lastly: An important reminder: DO NOT SELL on Flickr. DO NOT USE SALES TALK! Flickr will remove your account – even if you have a paid account.
