Are you still been bombarded with ‘free’ reports and ‘amazing new software’ that works with, or shows you how to make the most of, the ‘latest’ Google update? Still? Months after the update actually happened?

Some people just can’t do enough BS creation and I for one find it so annoying that so called experts and ‘insiders’ try lining their pockets by ‘selling’ their products and services based on what is, effectively, old news.

I got an email this morning inviting me to a webinar which would explain to me all the amazing new features of the latest Google update – code named ‘Caffeine’ (as we all know by now, of course) and how optimising web content has changed ‘dramatically’ because of it (cough, cough, erm… bullshit).

Whenever Google launch an update, which is more often than is publicised, by the way, there is a gaggle of money grabbers who announce that they, and only they, have all the ‘secrets’ you need to take advantage of the ‘newest’ version of the most powerful and most widely used search engine.

If anyone gets in touch and spouts on about ‘optimising your website for the latest Google update’ tell them, as politely as you see fit, to have a nice day. You might also want to let them know that the ‘news’ is about 6 months old and they should get a life and keep up with current events.

Google’s Caffeine Update is Nothing New

Although many of the more visual enhancements associated with the ‘new’ Google are fairly new (a range of options down the left, for example), Caffeine is, in fact, almost a year old right now. The first ‘mini-launch’ for beta-testing was kicking around the web in August 2009.

You’d think all the ‘experts’ would have been aware of that and would have done all their ‘announcing’ way back when. You’d also have thought that all the miracle SEO software would have been updated some time ago – and yet, some ‘secrets’ are still, just now, being ‘released’ as new.

My advice is that you steer clear of any SEO or Google Reseller who makes their high-pressure sales pitch by telling you they are the only people who really know how to maximise your rankings now that Google has been updated.

Yes There Was an Update, Yes its Called Caffeine and Yes its a Big Improvement

Yes, Google did update, but it has quite likely updated several times since. The work goes on at Google as they constantly find newer and better ways of fine-tuning their search algorithm in order to provide more accurate and more relevant results for all of us.

I’m sure, however, that there will soon be another ‘big’ update as I see that there is still a lot of ‘old’ content outranking newer, more currently relevant, content for some searches. That said, though, I would recommend your focus be firmly on creating up to date and relevant, well written and well tagged, content that will emphasise your main theme/niche – thus, enhancing your rankings in Google for all relevant phrases that relate to your business.

See for yourself how Google Caffeine impacted your search rankings.

Ignore all the ‘announcements’ and keep doing your own keyword and rankings research.

Regularly check the search results for your main phrases and observe how Google Caffeine has impacted your rankings. This is hardly rocket science; you can do it yourself using the normal Google search and the external keyword research tools.

Plus, because we all know that Caffeine is aimed at indexing and ranking the newest and most up-to-date content (as best it can) above older static content, you know what you need to do in order to enhance your rankings – and maintain them…

Your ultimate defence against loss of Google rankings after an update is to keep doing the right things.

Don’t panic if your ranking does slip a while – it could be temporary while Google settles down after a massive data re-indexing session (one of my websites saw rankings plummet off the radar for a few days and then bounced back safe and sound) – just keep creating and distributing useful, informative, relevant, unique, original and *new* content.
