This is part 2 of a 3 part post. Make sure you read part 1 first else it might not make sense what I’m talking about.
Remember – Google guarantees nothing. It is not a directory that assures your spot in the rankings will be consistent. It is a search engine and the objective, as at Bing, too, is to get better and better at serving up what is current, most relevant, and, by doing so, most accurate results for their users.
Sprinkling a spot of SEO here and there now and then ain’t gonna cut it as the web gets more and more competitive. Just like you, no-one wants to concede the top spot and no-one wants their listings shoved off the top 10 (the elusive first page of Google).
So often I get asked questions like:
“can my website be ‘optimised’ to achieve top-10 rankings?”
Yes. Any website or blog or individual chunk of content can be ‘optimised’ but there’s no guarantee that (a) Google will index it, (b) Google will rank it or (c) you’ll wriggle your way into the top-10.
Anyone who tells you differently and/or guarantees they can get you into the top ranked positions is a fibber and you should run a mile in the opposite direction.
“how much does SEO cost and how long does it take?”
Anywhere from a few hundred pounds/dollars a month to hundreds of thousand pounds/dollars a month. How long… Erm…
Anyone who can put a ‘fixed’ price and timescale on an SEO project is in cuckoo land.
“I’m paying for SEO but why can’t I get top ranking for my phrases?”
Dozens of answers could be right here. You SEO dude is trying to apply a ‘one size fits all’ system and it ain’t working for you, maybe there’s a lack of relevant content, lack of inbound links using the right phrases (or related phrases), lack of relevance throughout the website / blog, perhaps you’re chasing the wrong phrases, maybe the Google bot thinks your website content is crap/old – lacks authority, et cetera, et cetera…
Any SEO dude (or dudette) who promises an easy quick fix using their ‘miracle / secret’ weapon is away with the fairies.
“my brother-in-law is a geek and he’s doing my SEO – what’s wrong with that?”
Oh, right. Cool. Another expert. There’s one born every minute.
Considering the hours and hours needed to work an effective Internet Marketing Strategy (of which SEO is a part) I can’t imagine anyone doing it for free – in their ‘spare time’. Cough, tut, laugh.
“why is SEO so damned expensive?”
Read on – oh, and by the way, it will get more expensive as it becomes more competitive…
If price is your major hang-up there are dozens of what I call ‘call-centre-SEOs’ out there who will promise the world for a few quid a month. There won’t care about your business being unique. They won’t understand that your objectives differ from the other 47,000 ‘clients’ objectives. But they’ll happily take your monthly payment whether it generates any business for you or not.
Have fun.
The problem here is that many people think that simply optimising their website content to be ‘better optimised’ than their competitors will assure them of a top-10 position – and there they will stay.
That is such a misconception and a myth, aided by many unethical SEO folks and, quite frankly, bullshitters and people who haven’t got a bloody clue what they are talking about.
I speak to a lot of SEO folks and none are more ethical than my friend Ramsey at 20206.co.uk – Website Design and Marketing who is often found banging his head against the wall while working with new and existing clients who have got the complete wrong idea about what it takes to generate targeted website or blog traffic.
Another major part of the problem is a lot of the software that ‘guarantees’ top-10 rankings or you get a full refund. This is BS. Believe me. I’ve read the small print on many of them and put many to the test…
Make sure you read part 1 | and, here is Part 3
