SOPA and the Entertainment Industry

Reading about SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act) I can’t help being bemused by the whole thing. After all, it’s the entertainment industry who seem to be doing most of the pushing for it, and yet they are the ones sharing all their content more than individuals via YouTube, Facebook etc., and losing sales because of it.

The entertainment industry wants to come down like a brick poop-house on file sharing and any theft of copyrighted material, like me sharing a video with you, you sharing an MP3 with me, and so forth…

But, here’s what really gets me rattled about this: They, they artists themselves, do more sharing of their full length material than all of us individuals combined.

If they stopped putting up all their full length videos (which enable us to watch / listen to every track by any artist we like), surely that would nudge us back to buying the tracks rather than listening online – for FREE.

Wake up and smell the coffee and all that.

Look at some of these stats:

Rihanna’s video channel has (currently) had 2,036,032,344 views!

SOPA and the Entertainment Industry - Beyonce Facebook Video Views

In addition to this, the activity of making illegal downloads available is happening in broad daylight… It’s not even “underground” any more like it used to be.

As a DJ I am well and truly p”d off at the availability of free downloads. Look, for example at one of the most popular Apps for Android phones called “MP3 Download Pro” with millions of users downloading all the music they want without shelling out one red cent!…

Will anyone shut down the Android App Store (Android Market – Android Market is an online software store developed by Google for Android OS devices) or is going after one of Google’s ‘ventures’ too much of a big fish to hook?

One Response to SOPA and the Entertainment Industry

  • Justin Bunker says:

They can’t shut the entire market down. However, if they tried, they could remove the application or at least restrict it from America. Just a matter of time and when they decide to do something.
