Without an audience you may as well be talking to yourself. Duh! How obvious was that? An audience of 1 or an audience of 1 million – it’s still an audience. An audience makes it worthwhile and tells you that whatever you are doing or saying is of value – to someone.
No matter how you look at it, be it readers, viewers, dancers or listeners – they are the audience – the recipients of what someone else is creating, sharing or selling.
When I logged into my podcast host many months ago and found that I had a couple of subscribers I knew I had an audience. I found that a few people had connected with my blog via RSS and that a few people had become fans and/or followers (Facebook and Twitter respectively) – which told me that someone (or at least a few) found my content worth ‘receiving’.
With 1 subscriber, 1 fan or 1 follower, it could easily make you think nobody is interested and perhaps make you want to throw in the towel – but that could be a big mistake.
Everything starts with 1 connection
No matter what your ambitions. Be it getting a hundred fans or a million followers; be it getting one new customer a week or a million page views each month – it all starts with 1 connection – an audience of 1.
Have you ever noticed that as soon as 1 person hits the dance floor at a wedding, dozens of others quickly follow? While sat at their chairs tapping their feet to the music – nobody wants to be the first to dance. But once they see others get up and dance, they will follow.
As soon as someone becomes your fan, your follower or subscribes to your newsletter or blog, others will see that ‘someone’ became your audience and will feel a little more inclined to follow suit. Well, if that person finds your content worth receiving – maybe it’s worth connecting with too.
Build your audience – 1 recipient at a time
We’ve all heard and read many times how important it is to “build your list” and thing like “if you don’t have a list you don’t have a business” well, that may be true but we now have many ways to “build the list“. We have many ways to gain an audience.
So start building your audience. Get your profile pages set-up on any relevant platform. Get a Twitter account. Get a Facebook page for yourself and your brand. Get your blog started… Start building your audience – 1 recipient at a time. And, if you play the right music, eventually, you will fill the dance floor.
