90% Of Web Content is Clutter – A Conversation

Chris started the conversation with “I was asked today what’s better marketing content – Written, or Audio, or Video format? I always answer that All three are better. :-) First create an audio version of the content, have it transcribed (written content type) & then create a video from the audio by creating a powerpoint presentation using royalty free im…ages or photos. But, if I had to choose one format type, it would always be video content.”

My first follow-up:
If you don’t want to create a powerpoint but have an idea for real video (not everyone is comfortable in front of camera, I know): (1) Make the video. Edit and upload that. (2) Extract the audio; send that to PodCast and various platforms. (3) Have the audio transcribed into text for blogs etc.,

I agree with you Chris – video is the ultimate engaging media but we have to accommodate everyone’s preferences – hence creating multiple versions of the same content.

Over to Chris:

Hey Martin, I really appreciate your input and yes the order of creating a video or audio first is not critical. :-)

You hit the nail on the head about catering for people’s preferences for consuming content. We are all different despite most of us preferring the visual modality.

Apart from the powerful emotive aspect of using motion video in our marketing, what about the sheer brilliance of how much love the search engines give to optimised videos (in general)?… See more

Again, thank you for your input in giving some real clarity to our community :-)

My next twopence worth:

Google loves video. Well, it loves constantly updated sites and blogs so it is no surprise that new video posts get indexed extremely quickly.

I’m sure you’ve seen it too but I monitor Google often when I post a video or a blog post and am no longer surprised to see the content appear in Google within a few minutes.

The problem though: Too many people create crap videos just to get into Google. At the end of the day – the content matters the most…. See more

Crap content. A weak message. Boring presentation. None will engage the viewer or compel the viewer to take any action – no matter how well produced.

Chris:

Hey Martin,

yes, video content is being indexed faster, but as we both know, because everyone and their dog is, or will be creating video content, only the better content providers that offer value will win the game.

I suppose it’s the 80/20 rule coming into play, yet again ;-) … See more

And then we have the ol’ “If content is King, then marketing is Queen” situation, which is what you hinted at. A crap video is not going to be good enough to get any result.

It must be good to be Google, just hoist your sail, and let the wind (Internet users) carry you to your destination.

In saying that, imagine if major content providers such as the major International newspapers de-indexed their content from the Google Index, and perhaps chose Bing to index their content. Google would have to re-think their game ;-)

I’m really enjoying this conversation Martin, sorry for the curve ball

Me:

I think you’re absolutely spot on with the 80/20 thing. Or should we be thinking more about 95/5? 95% of the content being created is purely to get into bed with Google and 5% of it is genuine, interesting and useful content.

Just look at the hundreds of re-re-re-posts, identical cross-posts and regurgitated video content – and that doesn’t include the 23 million new videos that land on the YouTube shelves everyday – absolutely pathetic attempts at an ‘instructional video’ or the 35,987,435 badly written blog posts auto-gurgitated every day that go out smothered in Adsense dust.

Oh don’t get me started… I could rant all day about crap and pathetic hyped up BS that 47 zillion ‘bloggers’ call content…. See more

As for Content being King – I hope that will always be true but I do wish the almighty Goog could differentiate between an original and some crap regurged cross-post. But then I suppose that wouldn’t be good for them if all their delightful Adsense ads were not being exposed.

Chris:

Respect Martin, Respect. ;-)

Your passion for this stuff gets the juices flowing (not all of my juices)

I assume you’re blogging about this stuff either directly or indirectly by intertwining this info?… See more

It’s funny you mentioned 95/5, because I mentioned to my wife not too long ago that I thought the 80/20 rule had moved to more of a 90/10 level. ;-)

It’s all got to the point when I compare the content (or lack of content) on the Internet as we know it, simply as a direct reflection of humanity (or lack of) as soon I walk out the front door and head onto the public realm.

What do you think?

Me:

You know what Chris. I don’t blog it anywhere near as much as I would like to. I do have a lot of opinions and, being such a perceptive and cynical old sod, I could easily demonstrate the art of losing fans, followers and friends easily – by ranting on that I think 95% of what goes on online is a complete and utter load of twaddle.

I don’t think that would be good for business though. Although – what am I saying? Maybe I could write “How to lose friends and alienate followers”… lol.

But, being honest (wow that’s novelty), I don’t get marketing business from the web at all (never made a bean online – My clients are businesses that I’ve worked with for many years)…. See more

I think between us we could agree that between 90% and 95% of the web is unnecessary clutter, noise, hype and various flavours of BS?

I have written a few posts along these lines but I am careful what I say – and that in itself tears at me because I want to be frank and open about how I feel but I know that wouldn’t be happy, jolly, fun content that makes the web world go round… Hardly makes for viral when some limey bloke starts laughing at and having a pop at Twitter (etc).

I like your “direct reflection of humanity” comment. I think you’re right (again). Isn’t it sad how little our next generation know about real communication, social abilities, transparency and honesty. They just don’t get it. If you can’t do it with fingers and thumbs they aren’t interested.

Hope I didn’t miss your point there – if I did then I’m a damp squid and you can clarify it for me.

What is the world coming to? Every grain of the amazing potential of the web has been violated by scams, bs and hype leaving us with nowhere to hide from it.

Sorry this was quite lengthy and took a few twists and turns – that’s how I think. Rarely in one straight line.
